Roman period there was an extensive rebuilding under Domitian (AD 81–96) and Trajan (AD 98–117) especially with a pompous two-, later three-storey façade. Besides theatre performances it also served for assemblies; a function as a gladiator arena for the later Imperial period is verifiable. Just before the 7th century it was integrated into the Byzantine city walls.
